BUILDINGS
Dryden Regional Health Centre's waste heat recovery unit and CO2 counter
Over the past decade, the Dryden Regional Health Centre (DRHC) has been
installing building upgrades in heating, cooling, lighting, and building
automation to improve energy efficiency. The most notable improvement was
installing SRU 5 condensing flue gas heat exchanger on boilers to recover
heat for domestic hot water. The units, made by Sidel Systems U.S.A. Inc.,
guarantee a fuel savings of 13% and a payback period of only 2.2 years.
For more information on the DRHC's projects, contact Ken Kiewning at

ENERGY
Hamilton Health Sciences to Implement Massive Energy Saving Retrofit Project
A performance contract with Johnson Controls has made it possible for
Hamilton Health Sciences to carry out about $50 million in facility
improvements without touching the hospital's capital budget. The project
will be one of the largest ever undertaken in a Canadian Hospital. The
expected savings from the 10-year performance contract will be used to
offset the cost of the improvements.

Online Auction Delivers $1.25 Million in Energy Savings, 10 Percent Green
for Adventist Healthcare

Adventist HealthCare will successfully reduce its future carbon footprint
and save on electrical costs for seven facilities in Maryland and New Jersey
through an auction over the World Energy Exchange. The January auction will
net Adventist HealthCare, a non-profit network of health-care providers
headquartered in Rockville, Md., more than $1.25 million in savings over its
current contracts by enabling the organization to lock in attractive rates
through mid-2013. More importantly, by purchasing 10 percent green energy,
the health-care provider will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,100
metric tons each year. World Energy helped identify better ways to manage
Adventist's energy portfolio, from understanding hidden costs in its current
contracts to the advantages of proactively shopping the market to meet
post-2010 demand. See press release at:

The Philippines Department of Health has Called for a Ban on Murcury
After meeting with Health Care Without Harm-South East Asia, the DOH
secretary, Esperanza Cabral, called for a ban on the importation of health
products containing mercury. The DOH has also instated non-issuance permits
to medical device distributors who sell equipment with mercury components,
such as thermometers and sphygmomanometers.

Surrounded By Plastic, NICU Infants Tested For Risk
It is possible that critically ill newborns in the NICU are at risk from
pthalates due to prolonged exposure to plastics in the form of feeding
tubes, breathing tubes and intravenous lines. Considering their body mass
and developmental stage, newborns are especially vulnerable to pthalates.
In fact, phtalate levels in have been found to be 100 times higher in
infants than in healthy adults. Research into the impact of pthalate
exposure on newborns in the NICU is ongoing.

4 Chemicals Used in Consumer Products are Toxic to Human Health
The federal government on March 6, 2010 declared four chemicals widely used
in paints, varnishes, stains and industrial cleaners as toxic to human
health, paving the way for their possible ban in products. The chemicals are
reproductive or developmental toxins and the third is a carcinogen. They can
also be used in nail polish, printing inks, artist materials and grout
products. One of the chemicals is used in some hairsprays, skin creams and
as a fragrance ingredient, according to Health Canada. The chemicals to be
declared toxic to human health are: 2-(2-Methoxyethoxy) ethanol (DEGME);
2-Methoxyethanol acetate (2-MEA); 2-methoxy-1-propanol; and C.I. Pigment Red
3. In the short term, the ministry of health is proposing a number of risk
management options to reduce Canadians' exposure to these substances. Read

TRANSPORTATION

Study of hospitals puts price tag on California's dirty air
California's dirty air led to nearly $200 million in hospital spending over
a three-year period because of asthma, pneumonia and other transportation
pollution-triggered ailments, according to a study which attempts to put a
price tag on the state's bad air. The study analyzed records from hospitals
and air quality agencies from 2005 to 2007. As many as 30,000 people
statewide sought relief in emergency rooms because of air pollution during
that period. Researchers undertook case studies at five hospitals, to
determine how their finances are affected by poor air quality. From 2005 to
2007, $1.9 million was spent at UC Davis Medical Center by Medicare,
Medi-Cal and other insurers to cover the cost of pollution-related care.
Medicare and Medi-Cal paid two-thirds of the costs associated with poor air
quality, according to the study. Commercial insurers and other private
sources footed the rest of the bill. Researchers say hospital costs are just
a fraction of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year on
pollution-related medical care. See story at:

WASTE
Researchers Call for Reuse of More Medical Equipment
The Association of American Medical Colleges describes that a shift in
hospital practice to reuse more medical equipment would save hundreds of
millions of dollars, and substantially reduce medical waste. Currently,
significant amounts of medical equipment is used once and then discarded.
However, researchers at John Hopkins University School of Medicine say that
the sterilization, recalibration and testing of such equipment makes reuse a
perfectly safe option.

Unused medications in Colorado could get second life
In Colorado, Senate Bill 115 is trying to avoid dumping unused medications
into water supplies. If passed, the bill would permit nursing homes and
hospitals to redirect unused, and un-expired medication to needy patients in
the state. All medications would first have to be donated to a non-profit
organization, which would subsequently distribute the medication to those in
need.

Even if you're careful, drugs can end up in water
US citizens are encouraged to throw out unused medication in the garbage,
rather than down a drain. The purpose of this advice is to keep
pharmaceuticals out of water supplies. However, a study from Maine suggests
that even properly disposed of medication can make its way into water
supplies through landfill seepage. The results of the study are fuelling
the creation of a novel bill that would require drug manufacturers to
develop and pay for an unused drug collection and disposal program. For more

The CSA Releases B128.3: Performance of Non-Potable Water Treatment Systems
for Public Review

The draft addresses the performance requirements for wastewater and
greywater treatment systems in cases where the treated reclaimed water is
utilized for applications such as toilet flushing and subsurface irrigation.
This standard does not address the diversion of untreated greywater, nor
does it address rainwater harvesting or stormwater systems. See:

2010 Behavior, Energy & Climate Change (BECC) Conference
This conference focuses on the practical applications of social and
behavioral research to achieve viable solutions to energy/climate
challenges. Last year over 700 participants from universities, government,
corporations and organizations discussed successful policy and program
strategies, shared important research findings, and created dynamic new
networks and collaborations. BECC 2010 will include 45 topic/plenary

3. MEMBER QUESTIONS

One of my colleagues is looking for a way to transport 2 or 3 recycling bins
(the big ones - 360 liters) at the same time in an hospital. His problem is
that their storage room is located at the far end of the building which
means some maintenance employees have to transport heavy bins (about 200
lbs) as far as one kilometer!
They are looking for a "bin train" a bit like the caddie trains in the
airports. If you have any information that could help them, it will be much
appreciated.

Thanks
