BC's Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)Takes Steps to Becoming
Carbon Neutral
In 2008, the organization put together its first sustainability team to find
creative ways to reduce PHSA's impact on the environment, aiming to be
carbon neutral by 2010. All new PHSA buildings will be designed to meet the
LEED gold standard, resulting in healthier work environments and energy
savings. PHSA was also the first health-care organization in Canada to use
energy efficient LED lights in one of its parking lots, something that
earned it a Power Smart Excellence Award from BC Hydro in 2008 for "New
Technology of the Year." PHSA also reduced its impact on the environment
through the use of medical teleconferencing, Telehealth and other efforts to
reduce staff travel. See:

Kaiser Permanente to Install Solar Power Systems at 15 Facilities
Kaiser Permanente has plans to deploy 15 megawatts (MW) of solar power
across 15 facilities in California by the summer of 2011 in partnership with
Recurrent Energy. The solar project is claimed as one of the largest
sustainable energy programs in U.S. health care. The solar power purchase
agreement project will provide on average 10 percent of the power needed to
run the buildings at these sites. Kaiser is expected to spend $95.6 million
over 20 years for power from the solar panels, which is nearly equal to what
it would spend to buy electricity from the grid, reports the San Francisco
Chronicle. the company wants to use onsite, renewable energy for 25 percent
of its electricity needs by 2020. See:

New US Military Hospital Designed to LEED Silver to Save 27% on Energy
Scheduled to open in spring 2011, the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in
Virginia will be the first hospital in the country to be built to meet the
LEED Silver requirements and the Energy Policy Act of 2005 regulations, plus
it will also incorporate the latest research findings of evidence-based
design (EBD). The hospital will consume 27.6% less energy (based on
regulated energy savings) than a typical hospital and will also save
approximately 4,000 tons in CO2 emissions. Much of the energy savings can be
attributed to a Multistack heat recovery chiller system for reheating,
high-efficiency variable speed drive chillers and variable air volume
devices. EBD as defined by

Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, Wisconsin Strives for 100% Renewable Energy
With renewable energy projects involving wind, solar, biogas and
hydrokinetic energy, along with a top-to-bottom review of how it uses
energy, Gundersen Lutheran hospital is one of the leaders in how hospitals
approach sustainability. In February 2008, the hospital set a goal to reduce
energy consumption 20 percent by 2009 and to generate 100 percent of its
electricity using renewable energy by 2014. The hospital is halfway toward
its 2009 goal, which amounts to $409,000 in annualized savings, said Jerry
Arndt, Senior Vice President of Business Services, adding that the hospital
makes upgrades with "one eye on sustainability, and one eye on financials."

Balanced Menus: A Pilot Evaluation of Implementation in Four San Francisco
Bay Area Hospitals
Balanced Menus is a voluntary program that seeks to improve nutrition and
benefit the
environment by reducing meat purchasing among participating hospitals by 20
percent within 12 months. The program also promotes shifting towards serving
more sustainably produced meat. The report describes a pilot evaluation of
Balanced Menus program implementation in four San Francisco Bay Area
hospitals. The pilot investigation shows that the Balanced Menus program
implementation across these four hospitals yielded substantial savings in
costs and greenhouse gas emissions that exceeded the initial 20 percent
reduction goal. "One of the most compelling aspects of this evaluation is
the greenhouse gas emissions reductions," says co-author of the report, Roni
Neff, PhD. "If the four included hospitals continued what they were doing
for a year, they would collectively cut over 1,000 tons of carbon
dioxide-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from meat purchases.See the

An Estimated 3 Year Payback for Hospital to Grow Vegetables On-site in Hoop
Houses
St Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Michigan is building 12 hoop houses to grow
vegetables. Cost savings occur with (i) not mowing the area, (ii) from using
the vegetables in the hospital cafeteria and for patient meals, and (iii)
proceeds from the sale of the vegetables at a farmers market to be run two
days a week at the hospital. The hospital serves 3,000 meals a day. For more

TOXICS

US EPA Eyes Unused Pharmaceuticals
EPA's goal is to get health care facilities, particularly hospitals and
long-term-care facilities, to control, reduce, or eliminate their disposal
of unused pharmaceuticals down toilets and drains. Two examples of how
hospitals have been affected by inspections to date include: 1. Department
of Veterans Affairs Eastern Kansas Health Care System had a conviction
settlement in August 2009 which included a supplemental environmental
project. This project required the selection and purchase of a
pharmaceutical tracking software package that will evaluate and identify
pharmaceuticals in the hospital by hazard classification; 2. Two state of
New York critical access hospitals who were charged with improperly
disposing waste pharmaceuticals have agreed to implement 'take-back'
programs to help households properly dispose of outdated and otherwise
unused pharmaceuticals. From: American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

WASTE

Study Finds Social Media Helps Increase Recycling Rates at Charlotte
University
A study conducted last year found that using social media to promote
recycling resulted in improved attitudes about recycling and increased
recycling rates on the university campus. The study found that upon
receiving social media e-mails, students would use this information to
influence others to recycle more frequently and that recycling rates would
rise. In the initial survey, "not thinking about it" was the main reason
students did not recycle. In the follow-up survey, the main reason given was
that recycling was inconvenient.

WATER

Hospitals to Reduce Bottled Water
Four US healthcare facilities, Abington Memorial Hospital, Christiana Care
Health System, Holy Redeemer Medical Center, and Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital, have taken initiative between World Water Day (March 22) and the
40th anniversary of Earth Day (April 22) to reduce the use of bottled water
and to educate the public about their environmental and health impacts.
Single-serving bottled water creates tremendous stress on the environment,
from the millions of barrels of crude oil used to make the plastic, to
shipping around the world, to the waste from 35 billion plastic water
bottles that the U.S. consumes. From: Women's Health and Environment
