Eduarda Calado (CCGHC Co-chair)
Project Manager, Greening Strategy, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto ON
As a key member of St. Mike’s Green Team, Eduarda is responsible for implementing green initiatives throughout the hospital, such as creating an awareness program to engage staff in making their work environment sustainable by conserving energy, reducing waste, increasing recycling, and encouraging the purchase of sustainable products. Her working experience has given her a unique viewpoint and the knowledge to positively affect change in a setting where clinical standards and sterility are paramount and often in conflict with environmental initiatives.
Kady Cowan (CCGHC Co-chair)
Energy Steward, University Health Network – Toronto
Kady Cowan helps to coordinate the implementation of energy and environmental management, pollution prevention, and toxics and waste reduction at UHN. Kady tackles the complexity of greening healthcare through a three pronged approach including technical, process and behaviour change. This approach includes translating complex environmental messages for a wide variety of audiences. Kady seeks and uses innovative methods to appropriately engage and motivate individuals and organizations to achieve sustainability.
Ron Durocher, P.Eng.
Project Manager, Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital, Windsor
Ron Durocher is the Project Manager at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, Ontario. He is the current Chair of the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES). Ron has been active within the CHES organization for over 15 years. CHES membership includes many of the people who will implement the greening projects as more hospitals get on board and Ron is pleased to be representing them on the CCGHC.
Dr. Trevor Hancock
Dr. Trevor Hancock is a public health physician and health promotion consultant who has worked for local communities, municipal, provincial and national governments, health care organizations and the World Health Organization. The main focus of his work has been in the area of healthy cities and communities, an area he helped to pioneer. He has been actively involved in the public health movement in Canada for many years, having been on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Public Health Association for a number of years, serving as President in 1986/7. Honours he has received include Honourary Life Membership in the Canadian Public Health Association (1990); Life Membership in the Ontario Public Health Association (1999); appointment as a Regents Lecturer at the School of Public Health, University of California at Berkeley (2000); the President’s Award, Public Health Association of BC (2004), and appointment as a Hallman Visiting Professor at the University of Waterloo (2008).
He has a longstanding interest in health and the environment, in the "conserver society" concept and the health and political implications of sustainable development. In 1989, he organized a national conference on health, environment and economy and continues to work to bring together the themes of health and sustainable development, particularly in the context of Healthy Cities, and more recently in the context of health hospitals. He is a founder of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and chaired the Board from 1993 - 2003.
In recent years his views on the place of hospitals in their community and their role with respect to health promotion and healthy communities has led to consulting work with hospitals and to a number of articles and speeches on the topic. He is a founder of the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care and in 2001 authored a major report on environmentally responsible health care in Canada. He has spoken and written extensively on the issue of Green Health Care, including a column for Health Care Quarterly from 2001 - 2005. Dr Hancock is currently a Population and Public Health Consultant at the Ministry of Health in British Columbia.
John Joseph (J.J.) Knott, CET, HMT
John (J.J.) Knott has served as the Director of Plant Operations for Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe, since 1991. Prior to that J.J. was Maintenance Manager with the Haldimand Norfolk Housing Authority. In total, J.J. has thirty two years of experience in the technology and facility management field.
J.J. has Registered Certification as an Engineering Technologist (Civil), certification as a Building Environmental Systems Operator (First Class), and certification in Medical Gas Piping Systems. J.J. has also achieved the designation of Building Maintenance Technician and Hospital Maintenance Technician through the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society, and has accredited standing, in the Building Operations field, through the Inter-provincial Facility Training Accreditation Council. J.J. is currently Vice President of the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES).
Aside from his work at the hospital, J.J. served on the Simcoe Hydro Electric Commission from 1996 to 2000, and currently sits on the Board of Directors, as Vice Chair, of Norfolk Power Inc. and the board of Norfolk Power Distribution Inc.
J.J. is a Life Member of the Kinsmen Club of Simcoe, a member of the Who Did It Club, and an executive member of the Ducks Unlimited Canada, Long Point Chapter.
Aura Rose

A communications consultant with over 25 years experience, including more than three years overseas. Aura has worked for small to large businesses, all levels of government, local non-profits and larger organizations. She has provided strategic consulting advice to members of the Senior Leadership team in health facilities, Executive Directors in the non-profit field and operators of private health companies. Aura has specialized in consulting to the healthcare industry for the last 10 years and knows the industry, its language and issues, politics and players.
Involved in the greening healthcare movement since 2003, when she sat on the BC Interior Health Authority's Green Committee, Aura has worked with organizations including Practice Greenhealth, Health Care Without Harm and Novation GPO on environmental management and communication issues. Passionate about the environment, she sits on the CleanMed 2010 organizing committee, has written several articles on environmentally responsible healthcare and runs an organic winery in her spare time.
Ed Rubinstein
Manager, Department of Energy & Environment, University Health Network, Toronto
Ed Rubinstein has been responsible for developing and leading UHN's Environmental Management System since 1999. Responsibilities include managing the Hospital's $20 million annual utility budget and procurement process as well as overseeing environmental management and programs at UHN. Both UHN and Ed's leadership in the field of “greening healthcare” have been recognized by several awards, including those from the Ontario Hospital Association, Natural Resources Canada, Practice Greenhealth and the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment.
Graham Takata
Consultant, Green Health Care, Ontario Hospital Association
Graham Takata is a sustainability consultant and the Ontario Hospital Association’s lead on green health care. His career has focused on applying new and innovative strategies to build a business case for sustainability while safeguarding the environment and human health. Graham has worked on some of the first carbon offset projects under the Kyoto Protocol, evaluated green technologies for the Government of Canada, and provided environmental consultations to governments in South America, the Caribbean, and Middle East. As a member of the CCGHC, Graham hopes to foster an understanding that human health and a healthy environment are synonymous, and that both can be improved through by integrating sustainability principles into the delivery of health care.
Dr. Jean Zigby
Jean Zigby is a family physician and palliative care specialist practicing in Montreal. He is a husband and father of two, and began researching the environmental impacts of healthcare in 2002 when he became affected by the magnitude of waste he saw in his workplace. Currently the Vice-President of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, he is the founding president of Synergie Santé Environment, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to reducing Quebec's healthcare eco-impact.
Charles Zurbrigg
Environmental Manager, Lac-Mac
Charles Zurbrigg lives in London Ontario and is the Environmental Manager and a shareholder of Lac-Mac Limited. Charles is a 4th generation business owner whose passion within the business is in relation to environmental issues. He has experience in many areas of the business including production, purchasing, sales, marketing, and various management roles including President.
Following his passion, in 2002 Charles started the company’s Environmental Impact Reduction Committee.
Charles has a passion for the environment that goes well beyond the products offered by his company. He is committed to continual environmental progress within Lac-Mac and within his personal life and makes choices that reflect this commitment.
He is an active participant within the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care’s Stewardship Council and is committed to assisting the health care industry become increasingly more environmentally minded and active.
His mid-tern goal is to continue with his environmental role within Lac-Mac and to follow his other passion of teaching. Charles is currently working towards that end and hopes to be teaching high school sciences on a part-time basis by 2012.
